Bruin season starts September
14
The puck drops on the Estevan Bruins 50th season with a home-and-home
series against the Melville Millionaires: September 14 in Melville
and the 15th in Estevan.
Forward Kyle Garagan, an Estevan native, is the captain this
year.
"I think he epitomizes what the Bruins should be about,"
said head coach/GM Karry Biette. "He's a hard person to
play against, he shows up every night, he finishes his checks,
and the biggest thing about a captain is he does what he says
and he says what he does."
Biette expects the 19-year-old Garagan to grow into the role.
He isn't worried that Garagan won't be able to handle the pressure
of being a captain in his hometown.
Defenceman Kealin Wong and forwards Chad Filteau and Riley Tetrault
are the alternates.
It's a young team, with only eight players returning from last
year. Wong and Garrett Lasko are the only returning defencemen.
"I think we can hold our own on the defence corps, but
I think we have some guys there that are 18 who are going to
grow a lot as the season goes along, and I think we have some
forwards who are only going to get better as well," said
Biette.
Goaltending shouldn't be an issue. Last year's No. 1, Guillaume
Perusse is back. Karsten Felske and Simon Auger will back him
up. The Bruins should also be deep at centre with Filteau Tetrault,
Kyle Stroh and rookie Brody Haygarth; and at left wing with
the top returning scorer from last year, Kyle Ermel.
Biette said his goal for this year is to finish in the top three
of the Sherwood Conference and win a playoff round.

Mann and Dayman round
out championships

Dave Dayman (6) won the mini-sprint class at
the Estevan Motor Speedway.
The Estevan Motor Speedway decided its final
two track champions during the Thunder City Fall Classic September
8 and 9.
Dave Dayman won the mini-sprint championship for the fourth
straight year. Jim Mann won the first-ever pure stock championship.
Dayman topped the mini-sprint standings with 300 points, three
better than his brother Allan and eight more than Kohlan Fedyk.
Dayman said he got lucky during the race season to not suffer
a flat tire, an accident or a bad race set-up.
"Anybody could have won," said Dayman. "For the
last couple of seasons, it's been a one-point or a two-point
difference."
Dayman hopes to race mini-sprints again next year. He'd like
to see more cars in the mini-sprint series.
Mann won the pure stock standings in style, capturing the feature
on the 9th. His 234 points were six more than Trevor Gowen.
Mann isn't sure what he will do next year. He entered pure stocks
to help get the circuit off the ground. He likes that it's affordable,
but he would like to see more drivers in the series.
A good start was important to the championship, he said.
"The competition wasn't near as intense at the start of
the season as it was towards the end of the season," said
Mann. "The rest of the fellows came a long ways and provided
a lot better competition towards the end of the season."
Feature winners in the modified races were Davin Emmel on the
8th and Aaron Turnbull on the 9th. Rob Curtis won the hobby
stock feature both nights. The modified and hobby stock track
champions were decided in August.
Fedyk won the mini-sprint feature on the 8th. Kip Dayman won
the feature on the 9th. Dustin Schell won the pure stock feature
on the 8th.
The track's 2007 season will come to an end September 23 with
the third annual Enduro race.
