The characters are based on real people including Marie's Dad, Ed Donais of Alida. Dad was a peacekeeper in Germany 1945-46. He befriended a 10 year old boy, Johann. In 1998 Mom went to Germany to meet Johann's only remaining sibling. She told Mom, "It was by way of Eddie that we were to be fed."
