Hello there, my name is Dave Oldhaver. I’m currently employed in the oilfield in and around Estevan, Sask. Recently a lull in activity allowed me to follow up on one of my favorite pastimes, Antler Carving & Artwork.

I started my first project in about 1996 which took me 2 years to complete. Since then I have turned out about 50 different pieces. All my carving’s are done on Moose Antlers and I have integrated Mule, Elk & Whitetail into the mounting process.

These animals all shed their antlers annually; I travel around and pick up or collect them from trappers or other hunters who have come upon them in their travels.

All pieces involved are done on naturally shed antlers, with the exception of a couple that I have taken while hunting. The carvings range from 18” - 36” in width and are mounted on exotic woods from Africa. I use Zebra wood, Rose wood and Paddock which all have a very nice finish.

The eagles that I have done range from 12” - 36” and are balanced on an antler or creeping cedar base or a combination of both.

There has been an increase in artists and craftsman making antler chandeliers which has driven up the price of antlers to $15 - $18/lb for fresh, coloured horn. This is why I’ve tried to incorporate some different woods into my work.

I do some custom work to an extent although I try not to sway off of my wildlife scenes too much. This is just a hobby at present, but if orders allowed I would do it full time.
