Missing man's parents heading for New Zealand to join the search for him

NELSON, New Zealand - The parents of an Ottawa man missing in New Zealand are travelling to the South Pacific country this week to search for their son.

Michael Hayes told Fairfax Media in a weekend interview that he and his wife will visit the South Island where Connor Hayes, 25, and his girlfriend Joanna Lam, 24, disappeared three weeks ago.

The body of Lam was recovered from a beach north of the tourist town of Haast on Sept. 20, but searchers have found no trace of Hayes.

He and Lam were last seen at Fox Glacier on Sept. 10 in stormy conditions and parts of their rented campervan were found a week later.

Police believe they either drove over a cliff inadvertently or were swept off by a landslide.

In his interview, Michael Hayes also thanked New Zealand authorities for their search efforts.
