GANDER, N.L. - The worst is over, but Environment Canada says parts of Newfoundland can still expect high winds overnight and Sunday morning after an intense blizzard swept through the province.
David Neil, a meteorologist with Environment Canada in Gander, said a blizzard warning is still in effect for Gander and parts of north-east Newfoundland.
But he said that will likely be lifted later Saturday evening.
He said 100 kilometre an hour winds are still lashing the Bonavista area.
Visibility on highways is improving, but Neil said winds could still reach up to 80 kilometres an hour overnight and tomorrow morning.
"Throughout the night things should ... taper off," said Neil. "It will mainly be over more exposed areas that there could be areas where visibility may be drastically reduced."
On Saturday morning, blizzard warnings were issued for the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas and much of north-eastern Newfoundland. Some roads were reduced to near zero-visibility.
By late morning, about 10 centimetres of snow had fallen at St. John's airport.
Neil said only about 1 cm has fallen since then, and light flurries will persist into Sunday.
Several arrivals and departures were cancelled at the St. John's International Airport, and a handful of others were delayed.
Neil said a low-pressure system just off the east coast of the Avalon Peninsula is bringing the severe conditions to the province.
This is one of several storms that have hit the province in the past week, however this particular blast has been the most intense, he added.
