The United Way Estevan's board of directors has started to hold weekly meetings in advance of the organization's annual telethon, which will be on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18.
President Doug McDavid said committees are being formed for the broadcast, and the United Way is looking for volunteers, who help make the telethon possible.
McDavid said they're in need of singers and dancers to provide entertainment throughout the 33-hour broadcast. The entertainment committee has already spoken with some of the performers who have been involved in the past.
“But they're always looking for new entertainment, so if anyone knows any good type of entertainment that would be good for the telethon, they can contact the United Way office,” said McDavid.
They are also in the midst of contacting businesses and organizations who have worked phones and cameras previously. They can also use volunteers to work in the kitchen, or in behind-the-scenes capacities.
The United Way is also speaking to businesses about ways that they can support the organization, whether it be through hosting fundraisers prior to the telethon, or making pledges during the show.
“It's only a month-and-a-half away, so we need all that fundraising done from the various companies so that we can meet our goal this year,” said McDavid.
McDavid said they also need handmade bid items for the silent auction that happens during the telethon. A quilt has been donated by the Heart and Hands Quilting Guild for the telethon's raffle.
This year's goal is $340,000. McDavid said he is very confident that the United Way will reach its goal, with the help of the community.
Last year marked the first time in 37 years that the United Way did not reach its target during the telethon. They eclipsed the $350,000 objective a few weeks after the broadcast.
Funds raised during the telethon will be directed to the United Way's 18 member agencies.
“Almost everyone's touched, in one way or another, by one of the member agencies,” said McDavid.
This year's theme is Community Starts with You.
