Heavy rains in late August caused a delay in the reopening of the Gainsborough Health Centre.
The health centre has been closed since late June, when torrential rains swamped the far southeast corner of the province. Gainsborough was among the hardest hit communities by the flooding, as a mandatory evacuation order was issued for the historic village, and the health centre was shuttered. The centre's 16 residents have been staying with family members, or at other facilities in the health region.
The Sun Country Health Region revealed plans last month to have the health facility reopened on September 2. But the precipitation recorded on August 22 to 24 put pressure on the municipal sewer system in Gainsborough, and delayed the centre's reopening.
“Contractors are very busy with all the demands on their time,” Sun Country stated in a news release.
The health region states that while residents are anxious to return home, they are being well cared for in their temporary locations.
