Library will host two author readings

Comments

The Estevan Public Library is promoting a pair of upcoming author readings.

The first will be on Saturday, September 6 at 2 p.m. with Saskatchewan author Todd Devonshire. He will be reading from his novel, Rink Burgers. He will also discuss his experiences with small-town hockey, the food at arenas, and the process of writing his novel.

Devonshire was born and raised in Big River. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with degrees in education and kinesiology. The inspiration for his novel came during his years of travelling, specifically as he rode the trains and subways through Tokyo.

He eventually returned home to Saskatchewan and finished Rink Burgers.

Devonshire will answer questions from the audience he is finished reading.

The other function will be on Sunday, September 21, also at 2 p.m., when Saskatchewan author and actress Jean Freeman will be reading from her non-fiction book, Fists Upon a Star: A Memoir of Love, Theater, and Escape from McCarthyism. Freeman will also be promoting her two children’s books: Where does your Cat Nap? and Where does your Dog Sleep?

Freeman is probably best known for her portrayal of the mayor’s grandmother on the hit Canadian show, Corner Gas, but she has also served as a stage performer, writer and storyteller.

Her collaborative work with the late American theatre director Florence James was Freeman's first foray into adult literature. In the book, James shares her memoirs of fleeing the United States to Saskatchewan after a devastating experience with McCarthyism.

Freeman and James worked closely together before James' passing.

Following the reading, Freeman will be available for questions and discussions.
