Cornerstone board approved technology strategic plan

The South East Cornerstone Public School Board adopted a strategic plan for technology, which will take the division through 2020, during the August 21 board meeting.

The plan sets out five key goals:

*Teachers will be competent and confident using and integrating information technology;

*The division will have a reliable, adequate, cost effective, and secure technology infrastructure that supports the learning, teaching and administrative goals of the school division;

*Technology will be used to improve administrative effectiveness through efficient business practices, communications, planning and record keeping;

*All teachers in the division will have the technology, training, skills and resources needed to assure students will meet provincial learning objectives, and have the technological means to assess and record student progress;

*Finally, technology will be used to provide the most current, accurate and extensive information resources possible to all learners in the school division and community, in a cost effective and reliable manner at maximum convenience to the user.

In addition, the school division will use technology to improve its administrative effectiveness through efficient business practices, communications, planning and record keeping.

"Our 2014-2020 strategic plan for technology re-examines how we continue to achieve our goals," the report states. "Technology changes rapidly, and our students are different because of it.

"Technology is pervasive in the lives of our students, and providing them with educational experiences that are not reflective of life beyond the classroom walls is not supportive of student learning in today’s digital world."

The division will also follow standards established by the International Society for Technology in Education in six areas: creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration; research and information fluency; critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making; digital citizenship; and technology operations and concepts.

The report also examines the feedback that was provided during meetings with stakeholders.

Three components in the plan require budget consideration: hardware, including infrastructure; software; and staff development.

"Research states that a budget which places equal financial support in all three areas will in fact support student learning," the report says.

Other highlights from the meeting were:

*A moment of silence was observed in honour of former board member Len Williams. Williams served as a trustee for South East Cornerstone from its establishment in January 2006 until his passing in July. Due to the vacancy caused by Williams' passing, the board approved a by-election for the Weyburn subdivision on Wednesday, October 22.

*Terms of reference for the board’s governance/human resources committee, which was established in March 2014, were approved by the board.

*The next meeting will be held on September 15.
