Riders win nail-biter


The Saskatchewan Roughriders edged the Montreal Alouettes 16-11 in a tight game. The Riders defence, led by John Chick’s three sacks, came up big again. Quarterback Darian Durant attempted 30 passes, while completing 19, for 221 yards and one touchdown. The Riders record is 5-2 and their next game is against the B.C Lions.

Other scores from Week 8 were: the Calgary Stampeders got past the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30-20, the Edmonton Eskimos edged the Ottawa RedBlacks 10-8 and the Toronto Argonauts beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 38-21. Then the Argos lost to the B.C Lions 33-17.

In the NFL preseason, the Seattle Seahawks hammered the San Diego Chargers 41-14 in a one-sided game. The Seahawks’ record is 1-1 and their next game is against the Chicago Bears.

Other preseason scores were: the New England Patriots got past the Philadelphia Eagles 42-35, the Oakland Raiders edged the Detroit Lions 27-26 and the Green Bay Packers blasted the St Louis Rams 21-7.

In international rugby, the Qantas Wallabies played the New Zealand All-Blacks to a 12-12 tie. The Wallabies record is 0-0-1 and they will face the All-Blacks again in their next game.

In Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners took two of three games from the Detroit Tigers. The Mariners are in third place in the American League West Division.

In Major League Soccer, the Toronto FC lost to Sporting KC 4-1 in a lopsided game. Toronto’s record is 9-8-5 and they are in third place in the Eastern Conference.

Jeff Gordon won the NASCAR Pure Michigan 400, finishing ahead of Kevin Harvick, who started the race in sixth place. The next race is the Irwin Tools Night Race.
