Support for Alida flood victims

Comments

The Newalta Group and the United Way Estevan recently organized a barbecue in Alida to support the flood victims in the village.

“It had been planned for a bit in Alida because of the flooding...and it was more of a community get-together,” said Estevan United Way marketing and administration manager Laura Bjarnason.

Around 50 people attended the barbecue at the community hall, according to Bjarnason.

“We got together and we visited and we got to know a lot of the people and what they’ve been through,” she said.

Bjarnason said that Newalta’s plant in Alida was affected by the flood, and they thought it would be nice to plan a community event.

Newalta supplied all of the food, and they barbecued 200 hamburgers and hotdogs, according to Bjarnason.

Even though Alida's housing didn't suffer as much damage as other communities, the roads in and out of the town were impassable, according to Bjarnason.

Bjarnason also got to hear what some of the residents experienced during the disaster. One incident that stood out was that of a 12-year-old girl named Charity.

Charity was scheduled to have open-heart surgery, but it had to be postponed until the roads could be travelled on.

Bjarnason said that once Charity had the surgery, she was happy to return back home to Alida.

As Alida is a small town, Bjarnson said that the flood was a “big deal” and was a travesty. So the barbecue was meant for the community to enjoy, and get away from the hard work associated with the recovery.

“It’s good to do for the community, just to be out there and meet them and say ‘We know you guys went through a lot, and we’re here and hope everything goes well coming back from such an event like as that,’” Bjarnason said.
