The Hearthstone Community Campaign has resulted in many ways to fundraise for the new nursing home, and selling crop is a new one.
A canola field north of Estevan that is owned by Frehlick Farms is slated to be harvested at the end of the month. Revenues will be directed towards Hearthstone. The field is located at N1/2 14-04-09 W2.
Frehlick Farms provided the land for the crop, but other businesses are involved with the project as well.
Ray Frehlick said that Redhead Equipment supplied the equipment to seed the canola, and they are also going to be involved with harvesting the crop as well.
Monsanto donated the seed and Bayer CropScience supplied the chemicals for the crop, according to Frehlick.
Frehlick said he has contributed to Hearthstone already, but hopes that this project encourages other people to find unique ways to support the campaign.
He believes that Estevan is in need of a new nursing home, and that is one of the reasons why he became involved in this project.
“I think our elderly people deserve more than they got now in the one they’re living in,” he said. “I’m getting in that age group where I might need a place (like that) to live in some time, and need attention and care.”
Frehlick expects that this project will be a big fundraiser. There is 282 of acres of crop seeded, and Frehlick said that canola is $10 a bushel and sells at 40 bushels an acre.
There is already a buyer for the crop, as Pioneer will be purchasing it as soon as it’s harvest. Pioneer was also a contributor on getting this project started, he said.
Frehlick says he is always looking for ways to support the community, and this project helps him and the other people involved do that.
Hearthstone committee chair Vern Buck also believes that this project well help them get that much closer to their $8 million goal.
“By the time this thing comes off, it might be the thing that leads us very, very close to the top,” he said.
