Work continues on new Bienfait pool

The construction is ongoing for the new swimming pool in Bienfait.

Bienfait residents have missed having a swimming pool in the community this summer, says Mayor Jamie Bonokoski, but people are looking forward to the return of swimming in 2015.

The new pool is currently under construction. It's an outdoor pool that will be located to the east of the old pool, which was an indoor facility.

Bonokoski said progress has been slow.

“It would have been nice to have it running a little quicker, but some things you can't control,” he said.

Contractors are currently working on the building that will house the change rooms, and on the pool itself, he said. They also need to build the fence and add liner to the pool.

Not only will it be a new outdoor pool, as opposed to a 40-year-old indoor pool, it will have a zero-depth entry point. It will allow users to walk into the pool.

“It's the same as what the Leisure Centre (in Estevan) has, where you don't have to jump into the pool, you can just walk right in,” said Bonokoski.

The community has been fundraising to pay for the pool, and the mayor is hopeful that once people can get in the facility and use it, that they will receive more donations.

Bonokoski said the community wanted to have the pool finished for this summer, but weather delays and other issues put them behind schedule, so now they're optimistic it will be finished next summer.
