The Estevan Golden Eels earned 61 medals at provincials in Weyburn on July 26 and 27.

The Estevan Golden Eels swim club won the provincial championship for the large clubs during the Swim Sask. summer provincials in Weyburn on July 26 and 27.

Three athletes from the Golden Eels were the overall provincial trophy winners in their respected age groups. They collected medals in all of the events they competed in.

Emily Tarnes won in the eight-and-under girls’ category, as she earned one gold and four silver medals.  Denver Sehn was the provincial champion in the eight-and-under boys’ group, earning three gold, one silver and one bronze.

And Hannah Mantei was the winner in the 12-and-under girls division, taking home five gold medals.

The Golden Eels brought home a total of 61 medals. Sixteen other swimmers won a medal at provincials.

Bryse Wheeler earned a gold and a silver medal in the eight-and-under girls’ division.

In the 8-and-under boys, Lucas Dzeryk won two gold and two silver medals, Justin Linthicum earned two gold and two bronze medals, Ryan Dickie won two silver medals, and Logan Dalziel earned one silver and one bronze.

Josh Wilson took home two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the 12-and under-boys.

In the 14-and-under girls, Racquelle Gibbons won two silver and three bronze medals, Peyton Wilson won three bronze medals, and Emily Marshall earned one bronze.  As for the 14-and-under boys, Thomas Wakely collected two gold and two bronze medals, and Garret Ross attained one bronze.

Karlee Ross earned a silver medal in the 15 to 17 girls’ category.

In the 15 to 17 boys’ division, Taylor Fornwald collected two gold medals and one silver, while Samuel Beahm earned one gold and two silver medals.

Also competing at provincials were: Alexandra Andrist, Josephina Andrist, Jose Beahm, Jesse Beahm, Zachary Beahm, Jillian Fornwald, Reagon Gibbons, Hayley Greening, Logan Marshall, Christopher Sutter and Colin Sutter.

Since Estevan had the most athletes among the 14 clubs at provincials, coach Akeela Jundt knew they had a chance to win the title.

“We went into it hoping to pullout a win, because we did have the numbers for it,” she said.

Jundt was proud of her swimmers, as all their hard work in the summer has paid off.

“We have seen major improvements in stroke (techniques) and times, we’ve seen a lot of team spirit and we’ve had a lot of fun, and I think that’s all you can ask for,” she said. “That was great to see because with the way that we train them, we hope that they peak at provincials,”

Jundt said that most of the success the Golden Eels have had this year came from the positive attitude that the athletes displayed at competitions and practices.
