Preparations begin for Collage

The annual Collage Cultural event in Estevan is going to have a new look, a new location and a new format this year.

This year's showcase has been re-christened the Collage Cultural Arts Fair. It'll be a one-day event on Saturday, September 27, and it will happen at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum.

Southeast Newcomer Services (SNS) is organizing this year's Collage, and program coordinator Sarah Mehler said preparations are coming together well for the event.

Activities will begin at noon. There will be children's crafts and activities, cultural and heritage events, entertainment and a global market. Exhibitors are still needed for the global market.

Mehler said they would like to have a farmer's market type of event for the global market, but they want the exhibitors to be from different cultures.

“We have a lady coming to do henna (tattoos),” said Mehler. “We have a lady who is going to have some … fresh Lebanese food. We have some Ukrainian girls who are going to make perogies … and sell them,” said Mehler.

They're also booking entertainment for the festival. The Estevan PPCLI Army Cadets' pipe band is among the groups booked for the event. Mehler said they want to have more entertainment.

Regina-based author Ponziano Aluma will be making an appearance. Aluma penned the book We're Here. Now What? It offers a humourous look at the move that he and his wife made when they immigrated to Canada from Uganda.

“It's supposed to be a pretty funny book,” said Mehler. “He's going to come down for the day and sells his books, and do a reading for us.”

Mehler said SNS is hopeful that the weather will cooperate, and that they can have the Collage events outdoors. If conditions are wet or windy, then Mehler said Collage will be moved indoors.

Collage is part of Culture Days celebrations in Estevan.

This year's Collage marks the fourth edition of the event. In its first three inceptions, it was a multi-day event, named the Collage Cultural Festival, and it was held at multiple locations in downtown Estevan.

This is the second straight year that SNS has been responsible for Collage.
