Literacy Group offering two programs

(L-R) Jotham and Amariah Klix are among the youth who have participated in the Estevan Area Literacy Group's Nature Smarts program.

The Estevan Area Literacy Group (EALG) is offering a summer staple and a new program to keep youth reading this summer.

Nature Smarts, which the literacy group has offered for a number of years, will be on Tuesdays at Hillcrest Park and Wednesdays at Royal Heights Park, starting at 2 p.m. each day. The first session was July 8.

“We have a lot of fun games planned,” said EALG coordinator Kathryn Roberton. “We have some really cool crafts.”

Literacy also plays an integral role in Nature Smarts. Crafts are based on or inspired by books. And young people will read a book during snack time.

Roberton said Nature Smarts has proven to be very popular over the years, and its one of her favourite EALG programs.

Their new program is Summer English Fun on Thursdays, starting at 1:30 p.m. at Hillcrest School or Hillcrest Park. It kicked off on July 10.

Roberton said they prefer that children register in advance, but those who show up the day of the program might also be accepted.

“We're going to help children who have learned English as an additional language keep up and hopefully improve their skills over the summer, while doing it in a really fun atmosphere,” said Roberton.

Programs for Summer English Fun will vary, but they might include book-based programs and theatre, journals and crafts to boost their English skills.

The EALG decided to offer Summer English Fun because the number of people in the Estevan area from other countries is growing.

“We wanted to make sure that we were providing a way to really help kids keep up their English skills during the summer, and that they were getting a lot of opportunities for real, authentic language during the summer,” she said.

Roberton said they hope to have 20 children a day for each program. Participants will take home a book at the end of each session.
