The Estevan MidCIty and Brick Midget Elite softball team competed at the 2014 Softball Saskatchewan provincial championship from July 4 to 6.

The Estevan MidCity & Brick Midget Elite went 1-2 at the 2014 Softball Saskatchewan Under 18B Girls provincial championship in Regina from July 4 to 6.

The Elite opened up the tournament with an 8-2 loss to the Battleford Bandits.

Coach Gary Earl said that the team got off to a slow start, falling behind 2-0 in the first inning. But they were able to chip away and only down 4-2 after the sixth. The game got away from them in the seventh, as the Bandits scored four runs.

The Elite also had the bases loaded in the sixth and couldn’t capitalize.

“Our bats didn’t come around like they normally do, we made a couple of errors … and it seems like those runs come around to score every time,” said Earl.

The following game, the Elite earned their first win of the tournament, defeating the Watrous Royals 8-7.

Earl said the team played great defensively and offensively, as the score was closer than it should have been.

“We pretty much were in control all game, and we played really well,” he said.

Their final game was against the Saskatoon Selects, and they lost 14-1.

“They were a good, strong team, they played well defensively and again our bats cooled off, and a few errors cost us big time,” Earl said.

Estevan did not advance to the playoff round.

The Elite will compete in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Tournament in Surrey, B.C, starting July 17.
