The Estevan Team Industrial Squirt Elite earned a silver medal in the under 12 B division at the 2014 Softball Saskatchewan Provincial in Regina on July 6.
The playoff round was rescheduled from the previous week due to weather.
In the quarter-finals, Estevan was matched up against the Assiniboia Aces, and defeated them 13-5 in five innings.
Emily Hanson started the game and pitched into the second inning. She was relieved by Sarah Nobiss, who finished the game.
In the semi-finals the Elite defeated the Melville Miss Mills 13-8, also in five innings.
During the game, Taylor Haux hit a home run to contribute to the offence, according to coach Jody Waloshin. He was also impressed with the pitching, as Nobiss and Sarah Rioux kept the team in the game to advance them to the final.
The Elite lost 9-7 to the Unity Panthers.
“That was one of the best games that I’ve ever seen the girls play,” said Waloshin.
He also noticed that their confidence was up from previous games against Unity. Unity beat them soundly twice in the first round.
“I think the confidence level really, really improved to make it a better game … having a lot of confidence in themselves, being able to know that they can compete at a higher level,” said Waloshin.
The teamwork of the Elite also impressed Waloshin, and he said that it was a huge factor in their success.
He said reaching the provincial final was a big achievement, as they improved from the start of the season.
“The girls, their enthusiasm, their skill level, everything, hitting to being aggressive defensively was huge, and a big achievement,” said Waloshin.
