The Rocket Sales Peewee Elite softball team won gold at provincials in Regina on July 6.

The Estevan Rocket Sales Peewee Elite are the 2014 Softball Saskatchewan provincial champions in the under-14 B division.

The tournament was slated to wrap up in June, but the semi-finals and final were pushed back to July 5 and 6 due to rain. The Elite went 4-0 in a round-robin in June to reach the semis.

They were matched up against Weyburn in the semi-final round, and defeated them 15-14.

McKenna Morrison started the game and Leeanna Mess relieved her in the later innings.

According to team spokesperson Rhonda Blanchette, the Elite were up 14-8 after five innings. They almost let the game slip away from them, as Weyburn tied it up in the sixth. Estevan scored a run in the seventh to move on to the championship round.

“They played really well on the defence; when Weyburn caught up and scored those runs we weren’t really making errors,” said Blanchette.

Among the defensive plays that the Elite made were a couple of line drive doubles plays executed by Camryn Brown at first base.

In the championship game, Estevan defeated the Hudson Bay Lazers 7-3 to take the provincial title.

Morrison was on the mound again and Caitlyn Hutt finished the game. Blanchette said that she was impressed with both the defensive and offensive play of the team throughout the game.

Blanchette said all the girls on the team played to their full capability, and were excited to finish a tournament. Their event before provincials was rained out.

“They’re so excited to finally get to finish a tournament and come out on top so that was great,” said Blanchette.

Blanchette said that winning provincials was quite the accomplishment, noting the improvement and the hard work put in by the Elite since the beginning of the season.

She hopes the Elite can repeat at provincials next year. Estevan won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

“All of the girls but four will be moving up next year into bantam… but hopefully we’ll have a strong team for next year,” she said.
