Impact's season comes to an end

The Estevan Harris Oilfield Senior Impact lacrosse team suffered two losses in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League playoffs that were part of the Sask. Lacrosse Festival in Regina July 5 and 6.

The Impact were matched up against the first place Saskatoon Brewers on July 5, and lost 21-4.

They were playing with a short bench, and they called up a goalie from the Saskatoon midget league. Rhett Handley and Kolby Fleury from the juvenile Big Dogs were also called up.

Coach Jody Harris said the help they received from other teams to dress a full lineup reflected the camaraderie within league.

“That’s what’s so great about this sport across the province is we help each other out,” she said.

The following day they were in the bronze medal game against the Regina Heat, and lost 17-8. Again the team needed call ups, as they dressed Handley and three juvenile players from the Regina Riot.

Harris was impressed with how the Impact responded in the second period after only scoring one goal in the first.

“I asked the team at the beginning of the second period … what’s our goal for this period … do we want one goal, do we want three goals? What do we want? Let's push ourselves here,” she said.

They ended up scoring four goals and caused Regina to use the full 30 seconds of the shot clock five times.

“In lacrosse, possession is everything,” said Harris. “If you have the ball, the other team can’t score,”

Even though the Impact did not win a game this season, Harris said the team remained positive.

“There’s no sad faces, there’s no belly aching…they know that every 20 minutes they played they got better and they’re looking forward to next year already,” said Harris.
