4-H sale sets records

The number of cattle was down, but the average sale price was way up at the annual Estevan Rotary Regional 4-H Show and Sale on July 8.

Twenty-nine animals were available in this year's auction, which was down significantly from the 50 that were sold last year. But the average sale price was $4.90 per pound.

Not only is it way up from the $3.10 per pound achieved last year, but according to event spokesperson Chad Ross, it is most likely a record.

"The support from the community was unbelievable," said Ross.

Carlee Ross from the Outram-Madigan 4-H Club had the grand champion steer. The 1,277-pound animal sold for $5.75 per pound to Kendall's Automotive.

Emily Geisel from the Benson Club had the reserve champion steer. It weighed in at 1,305 pounds, and sold for $7.50 per pound to Gillis Power Tongs.

Chad Ross said the decline in the number of agriculture families contributed to the low number of steers.

"It's a cycle, and I think it will grow back," said Ross.

But it likely played a key role in the soaring average sale price, he said. Some potential buyers might not have been able to purchase a steer this year.

The sale wrapped up three days of 4-H activities in Estevan. Judges evaluated the participating 4-H clubs, the members and their cattle using a variety of criteria. Awards were handed out prior to the sale.

Members of the Browning and Crossroads clubs also participated in this year's show and sale.
