Various colour runs are all the rage right now, and justifiably so.
Who wouldn’t want to run five kilometres and get blasted with coloured cornstarch? It looks like a blast, and I’m excited to give it a try, hopefully with my children, if I can find one close enough, and on an available date. I also think it would be super fun to have our own colour fight, and so I’ve started looking into how to pull it off.
The main ingredient is obviously being able to procure some non-toxic coloured powder to throw at each other. From the research I’ve done, most of it is a coloured cornstarch that is safe to throw at each other. One recipe on the Cute as a Fox website, which seems to be the simplest that I found, was to purchase non-toxic powdered tempera paint at an art supply store, and mix it in the blender with cornstarch.
This blog mixed it in a 1:1 ratio.
Another source, the Milly and Tilly website, mixed one pound of cornstarch with one cup of water containing approximately 50 drops of food colouring. Mix them thoroughly, and then press through a sifter onto a cookie sheet.
Evenly spread the mixture and bake at 200 F for 60 minutes. They also mentioned lowering the temperature and increasing the time to ensure no clumps.
Once you’ve got your powder all sorted out, you can throw your fight. Most participants of colour runs wear as much white as possible, mixed with some crazy coloured socks, headbands and sunglasses. Some type of eye protection is a must, and I’d even recommend ear plugs, as my sister-in-law was pulling purple cornstarch out of her ear for a good six months post-run.
Set some bowls or paper bags filled with powder around your area, and let people go for it when you signal “go time.” Your children will have a blast whipping colour everywhere, and don't be surprised to find yourself the main target.
This would also make for a fantastic photo session. I’ve done it before with wet paint; it was great and the portraits were wonderful.
