KidSport Saskatchewan chair Dorothy Josephson has announced that the organization has received a $30,000 donation from the family of the late Rod Fagerheim of Estevan.
After Fagerheim's passing in March of 2012, more than $30,000 was received in donations. The family has decided to redirect that money to KidSport.
“We are extremely grateful to Rod Fagerheim and his family for this generous donation to KidSport,” said Josephson. “KidSport believes that no kid should be left on the sidelines, and that all children should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports.
“KidSport provides support to children and youth to remove the financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport. All fundraising proceeds and donations are directly allocated to support eligible children and youth as well as sport programs.
“KidSport identifies the needs in communities, raises funds, and support programs that create opportunities for young people to participate in sport.”
The donation will be used by the KidSport Estevan Committee to assist youth in the area to have the opportunity to participate in community sport programs. It is expected that this donation will have a significant impact on participation in and around the Estevan area.
Rod Fagerheim was a decorated local athlete who excelled in many sports, and was passionate about hockey and golf.
He played with the Estevan Bruins and the New Westminster Bruins in the WHL, coached the SJHL's Estevan Bruins, and was instrumental in the creation of the Bruins Alumni Association. His efforts with the club resulted in his induction into the Estevan Bruins' Builder Wall of Fame.
Fagerheim was also inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.
