Celebrate Canada Day on July 1

Comments

Southeast Saskatchewan residents will have a number of events to choose from to celebrate Canada Day this year.

Bienfait will once again be hosting activities throughout the day. The event will open with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Then there will be the annual parade, which typically attracts large crowds and a variety of entries with red and white decorations.

Participants are asked to meet at the Bienfait Memorial Arena for judging at 9:30 a.m. The parade starts at the arena at 10 a.m.

It will make its way through the community, and end at the Bienfait Weldon School.

The bulk of the activities will be at the school. Starting at 11 a.m. highlights will include the Gypsy and the Rose musical show, cotton candy, karaoke, bingo, raffles, and a show-and-shine for cars and motorcycles. Birthday cake will be served at 11 a.m. as well, and there will be a concession.

The Bienfait Coalfields Historical Museum will be open for tours starting at noon.

Residents are encouraged to decorate their homes in red and white for a contest that will be judged on Canada Day.

A softball tournament will begin on the 30th, and wrap up on Canada Day.

Fireworks will begin at dusk at the school.

The Oungre Memorial Regional Park's Canada Day country gospel jamboree will begin at 1 p.m. Entertainers will include sibling quartet the Sundrops, Saskatchewan singing quartet the Willie Sons, award-winning American eight-person group the Link Union, local performers the Hansen Trio, Estevan violin performer Shayla Gill, and local performing group the Daae Family.

Comedian and impersonator Gery Schubert will be the emcee for the event.

A full concession will be available on site.

Other activities will also be offered in the park.

The Moose Creek Regional Park near Oxbow and Alameda will also have a bash. There will be an inflatable playground, face painting, a dunk tank, a raffle table and other attractions. The Funtazm Science Show will be at 2 p.m.

A concession will be available.

Fireworks will be at dusk. Organizers say they are best-viewed on the Alameda Dam beach.

As for Estevan, the Estevan Kinsmen and Kinettes Club will host their annual Canada Day celebration at their playpark in the Hillside subdivision, starting at 11 a.m. A variety of activities will be offered for families, and children can enjoy the playground or swimming.
