United Way sets its goal

The United Way Estevan's board of directors has set a goal for the 2014 telethon that president Doug McDavid believes is both ambitious and attainable.

The goal is $340,000, which represents a $10,000 decrease from the 2013 objective of $350,000. Last year marked the first time in the 37-year history of the telethon that the United Way didn't reach their goal during the broadcast; they did clear the $350,000 mark in late November.

McDavid said this year's goal is based on the needs of the member agencies, the United Way's commitment to community projects, and the organization's other expenses.

“We looked at every member agency's requests, and determined what their projects would be,” said McDavid.

The past 12 months have been a learning experience, McDavid said. It was “a bit of a shock” when they didn't reach their goal at the telethon, and now the board will work even harder, and spend more time promoting the United Way even more, to attain their objective.

There was some discussion of having the goal at the same level as last year, he said.

“There is a feeling right now that maybe Estevan's not quite as booming as it was last year,” said McDavid. “We didn't make it last year, at least during the telethon … so we thought with the change in how things are right now, we wanted to be realistic, but also a challenge as well.”

The United Way has added six new board members as well, he said, and they'll help out a lot.

McDavid said administrative and marketing manager Laura Bjarnason will be meeting with businesses during the summer months to generate support. The board will begin holding weekly meetings, to prepare for the telethon, at the end of August.

The telethon itself will be October 17 and 18 at the Estevan Royal Canadian Legion.
