The Los Angeles Kings have won the 2014 Stanley Cup. They beat the New York Rangers 3-2 in double overtime in Game 5 to win the series 4-1. Defenceman Alec Martinez scored the series-winning goal with five minutes left in the second overtime. The Conn Smythe Trophy went to Kings’ winger Justin Williams. This is the Kings’ second Stanley Cup in franchise history.
In CFL preseason action, the Saskatchewan Roughriders got past the expansion Ottawa RedBlacks 21-17. Ottawa was the home team for the game at Mosaic Stadium in Regina because their stadium isn’t ready yet. The Riders will close out the preseason against the Edmonton Eskimos.
Other preseason scores were: the Hamilton Tiger-Cats got past the Montreal Alouettes 28-23, the B.C. Lions beat the Edmonton Eskimos 14-11 and the Calgary Stampeders edged the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-20.
In the Arena Football League, the Cleveland Gladiators beat the New Orleans Voodoo 62-46 in a one-sided game. The Gladiators’ record is 11-1 and their next game is against the Philadelphia Soul.
Other scores from Week 14 were: the Orlando Predators beat the Jacksonville Sharks 58-48, the Pittsburgh Power got past the Philadelphia Soul 57-56, and the Arizona Rattlers hammered the San Antonio Talons 70-34.
In Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners took one of three games from the Texas Rangers. The Mariners are in third place in the American League West Division.
In the Western Major Baseball League, the Regina Red Sox beat the Medicine Hat Mavericks 9-3 recently. The Red Sox are in first place in the East Division.
In NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson won the Quick and Loans 400, finishing ahead of Kevin Harvick, who started the race on the pole. The next race is the Toyota Save Mart 350.
