Busy season for SV Theatre

The Souris Valley Theatre will be busy in its 24th season, and their first event is approaching.

Jacky Bell and Thunder open the season with a performance at Frehlick Hall on June 12. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

They are a music group out of Regina. Lots of members form the group performed at Frehlick Hall last year through A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, according to Souris Valley Theatre manager Jocelyn Anderson.

She said the Thunder's fiddle player, who is Bell’s husband, expressed an interest in coming back to Estevan.

The show is only for one night, and Anderson said the audience should expect bluegrass and country music from the group.

One hour before the show starts, there will be a barbecue to kick off the season, Anderson said.

“You can come down, get your tickets, grab a bit to eat, watch a great show, and it should be a good night,” Anderson told Lifestyles.

There will be two main stage shows this summer: The Marvelous Wonderettes from July 3 to 19, followed by The Odd Couple from July 23 to August 9.

The Marvelous Wonderettes is a musical that features four female entertainers, said artistic director Kenn McLeod. The first act is set in 1958 at a high school prom, where the four Wonderettes are singing. The second act is 10 years later at a high school reunion.

He also said that the musical features songs from the 1950s and 1960s that should be familiar to the audience, as they can sing or hum along to with the performance.

There is also a live band supplying the music for the production

“We have a really dynamic team of vocalists coming out for that show so I’m very excited for all the Saskatchewan talent,” said McLeod.

Two of the performers from The Marvelous Wonderettes were in last year's production of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change at the theatre.

Anderson said that play should be very fun, and an entertaining light musical.

The Odd Couple is a play that revolves around two characters; Felix and Oscar. Felix is recently divorced and moves in with Oscar, who is also divorced, and the two clash several times throughout the play, according to McLeod.

“They’re messy and clean together, and they kind of learn a lot from each other and grow … it’s hilarious,” said McLeod.

There have been multiple productions of The Odd Couple since it was written in the mid-sixties. At one time, it was a hit television series.

McLeod added that the play should be a great comedy that audiences will enjoy.

The two shows are produced by the Souris Valley Theatre, and they will put their own spin to the productions.

“There unique shows to the Souris Valley Theatre, and you’re not going to see that show anywhere else,” said Anderson.

Also during the summer, the Souris Valley Theatre is organizing three musical theatre camps.

The first camp is July 7 to 11. It is for children ages six to eight. The second camp, from July 14 to 18, is open to youth ages nine to 12.

Both camps are designed to introduce the youth to the stage, and will consist of activities to enhance skills that are needed to be comfortable while performing a musical, said Anderson.

At the end of each camp, the children will put on a production and showcase the skills that they learned throughout the camp.

The third and final camp of the summer is a longer camp, and it is set to happen August 5 to 15. It is open to youth ages 13 to 16.

“The kids are in charge of sets, they’re in charge of props, they’re in charge of everything to do with the production,” said Anderson.

For the first camp, Anderson says that there are only a few spots available until it reaches its capacity if 12. She also encourages people to register as soon as possible for the second camp.

Anderson said that it would be ideal for people to register by July 7 for the third camp, as they need to know as early as possible the number of youth attending the camp.

The Souris Valley Theatre plans to close out the season with a concert on August 23. The concert will feature the Chris Henderson Band, along with other acts. The event is still in the planning stages.
