Lacrosse teams play in Regina

The Estevan Tarpon Energy Big Dogs lacrosse team went 0-3 at the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) Festival in Regina on May 31 and June 1.

The Big Dogs lost 14-6 to the Yorkton Bulldogs on the 31st. Their defensive play cost them the game, according to coach Evan Handley.

“We didn’t do enough defensively in that game to win, and their goalie played really, really well,” he said.

He also mentioned that the team had a tough time keeping up with Yorkton, as the Bulldogs would score one or two goals right after Estevan had scored.

A few hours later, the Big Dogs were matched up against the Saskatoon Smash, and lost 33-11. The Big Dogs were short on players, and that didn’t help their cause, as Saskatoon is a really good team, Handley said.

The following day, Estevan took on the Prince Albert predators and suffered a 20-5 loss.

“They played us tough, they scored on their chances and defensively we just couldn’t stop them,” said Handley.

The Big Dogs need to continue to improve their defensive play, he said.

“We played a lot better on Sunday, but we still have a long way to go if we want to compete and win some more games,” said Handley.

As part of the festival, the annual PGLL all-star game was played between Team South and Team North. Big Dogs Mark Moriarty, Ty Currie, Rhett Handley and Tanner Froese played for Team South.

“The boys did extremely well and they did the Big Dogs proud,” said Evan Handley.

Currie and Rhett Handley both scored goals for Team South.

The Big Dogs will host Yorkton on June 7 at 6 p.m., and the Regina Rifles on June 8 at 3 p.m. Both games will be at Affinity Place.

The Estevan Harris Oilfield Senior Impact team dropped 18-3 and 22-1 decisions on the road against the Regina Heat on May 30 and 31.

Despite the 18-3 loss in the first game, coach Jody Harris said that the team has improved on their goal scoring, as it was their season-high for goals.

Throughout the two games Harris said that the Impact did not have a full roster, and noted that they are making improvements from game to game

The Impact have a rematch against the Heat June 7 and 8 at Affinity Place. Games start at 8 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
