Rachel Scanlon Pasag, a 33-year-old U.S. resident, has pled guilty to attempting to smuggle firearms into Canada.

A Regina Provincial Court judge sentenced her to one-day incarceration, and ordered her to pay a fine of $2,000. The jail sentence has already been served.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at North Portal examined Pasag’s vehicle on May 28, and seized two undeclared handguns: a prohibited .380-calibre semi-automatic handgun, and a prohibited nine-millimetre semi-automatic handgun.

Officers arrested Pasag and turned her over to the CBSA Criminal Investigations Unit.

She submitted the guilty plea on the 29th.

Five prohibited firearms have been seized by CSBA officers at North Portal so far this year. In 2013, officers seized seven prohibited firearms, nine restricted firearms and 123 prohibited devices.

The CBSA advises all travellers that they are required to declare all goods they are bringing into Canada, including any firearms and weapons in their possession. Failure to declare goods, including firearms, and other Customs Act contraventions may lead to prosecution.
