Johnson is Hooked on exhibit

Estevan's Evelyn Johnson has an exhibit, Hooked, on display at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum's project space.

Evelyn Johnson's ability to create art through rug hangings has earned her an exhibit at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM).

Johnson, an Estevan resident who is a long-time supporter of the local arts community, was on hand for a reception at the EAGM on May 23. Three of her works are part of an exhibit, Hooked, that is on display on the EAGM's project space.

One of the rugs depicts her childhood in the Norquay area. Johnson, her mother and her sister are picking wild raspberries. Her brothers are also incorporated into the work.

Another one, titled Anything but Wool, includes ribbon, tinsel, lace, fur and bits of cloth. She wasn't allowed to use wool – a common material for rug hangings.

"It was what our instructor wanted us to do," said Johnson.

A third submission reflects an encounter that several family members had with a bear when she was young.

Each of the works took a long time and effort to create, she said.

Originally rug hangings involved torn old clothing, she said. Artists wouldn't use anything new, and they wouldn't waste any materials.

And some people spend a lot of time dying the wool used in rug hangings so that it attains the desired colour, she said.

“You can create, and you can do it in different ways,” Johnson said.

When people study one of her rugs, they can see the different colours of green dye, she said.

Johnson is now working on one rug that is an old-time harvest threshing machine, with a team horses and a dog, and a rich background.

This isn't the first time that Hooked has been on display at the EAGM. Johnson submitted five of her rug hangings for the Estevan Arts Council's Adjudicated Art Show in 2012. She was one of two artists selected to apply to the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Council's to have a touring exhibit.

Hooked will remain at the project space until June 21.
