The Houston Texans had the first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, because last season they went 2-14. They selected defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney from the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Clowney was the Gamecocks' best player last season, and was named a first team All-American as well as the South Eastern Conference defensive player of the year in 2012.
In the Arena Football League, the Cleveland Gladiators got past the L.A. Kiss 45-42 in a close game. Cleveland’s record is 7-0 and their next game is against the Iowa Barnstormers.
Other scores from Week 9 were: the Pittsburgh Power beat the Spokane Shock 52-41, the Philadelphia Soul got past the New Orleans Voodoo 79-60, and the Jacksonville Sharks beat the Iowa Barnstormers 68-48.
In the National Lacrosse League, the Calgary Roughnecks edged the Edmonton Rush 12-11 in overtime in Game 1 of their West Final series. Game 2 will be May 16.
In NCAA Baseball, the No. 13 Florida Gators took one of three games from the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Gators are in first place in the South Eastern Conference's East Division.
In Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners split a four-game series with the Kansas City Royals. The Mariners are in third place in the American League West Division.
Jeff Gordon won NASCAR's 5-Hour Energy 500; he finished ahead of Kevin Harvick, who started the race in the pole position. The next races are the Sprint Showdown and the All-Star Race.
In the English Premier League, Manchester United tied South Hampton 1-1 in a close game. Man. U’s record for the 2013-14 season is 19-12-7, and they finished seventh in the league.
