Guess who's back!

I'm back, and thanks to my experiences from the last eight months, I have more skills to bring to this paper.

I recently finished my second year of studies at Lethbridge College, and the experience that I had with Lifestyles last year did help me, as my second year at Lethbridge was more hands-on than my first. It also dealt with similar skills that I learned while working for Lifestyles.

At Lifestyles last summer, I focused more on reporting sports, and in college I expanded my interests, by writing some human interest stories as well. While writing for the college newspaper, The Endeavour, it was focused on both college events, as well as stories within the community, as the paper got distributed throughout the city.

One of the things that was emphasized a lot while I was at college was taking a national news story, and making it relate to the Lethbridge audience. I got to do that on two occasions with the Sochi Olympics and the Ukraine riots.

With the Ukraine crisis story, there was a person from Lethbridge who grew up in Ukraine, and had family members living in the country. His brother was living in Kiev, where the main protesting was happening in mid-January.

It was neat to hear his perspective and how something happening in a different country had an impact on him. It was also interesting to hear is thoughts on the events in Ukraine, since he grew up in that country.

With the Sochi Olympics, there was a student from the University of Lethbridge who went there as a photo journalist, and stayed in the rural part of the city. It was nice to hear the other perspective of Sochi that wasn’t seen on television and how the city actually looks beyond the Olympic Park.

What the audience saw, and how clean it looked in Olympic Park was not how the whole city really is, as there are stray animals everywhere, and piles of garbage on some of the streets.

As for this summer, I’m looking forward to gaining more experience and improving on my writing, as I will be writing mostly sports. But I also will be covering other beats such as community news, and hopefully write feature stories as well.

Writing for Lifestyles this summer will help me become better and more diverse in the journalism industry, and hopefully lead to more opportunities.
