The Creighton Lodge received a total of $26,000 in donations on May 8, as Henders Drugs presented $25,000 and the Estevan Strippers oldtimers hockey club gave $1,000.
Both donations go a long way into the expansion of the lounge, said Creighton Lodge co-manager Shelly Veroba, as the project has been in the works since 2010.
“We didn’t want to have to borrow money against Creighton Lodge or take out anything to actually build, so we want to raise the money before we even start construction,” said Veroba.
Henders Drugs co-owner Larry Preddy, says that Creighton Lodge serves a great purpose for the senior citizens of Estevan.
“I think Creighton Lodge is a facility in Estevan that’s a real positive thing for the city,” said Preddy. “Our seniors need some place to live, where there’s a bit of care, but don’t need nursing care.”
Preddy supported the organization when he was on the Southeast Health District Board, which helped keep the facility open when all the others in the province were closed, he said.
The donation from Henders Drugs surprised Veroba and co-manager Judy Pratt.
“That is a huge donation, when they walked in here we were just flabbergasted,” said Veroba. “Henders always has been a great supporter of Creighton Lodge and this donation was just over the top for us…it definitely helps build towards our goal.”
Bruce Firth of the Estevan Strippers old-timers’ hockey club said the donation to Creighton Lodge was from the money raised at the recent Strippers tournament. They chose Creighton Lodge as it is a good cause.
Creighton Lodge hopes to begin construction on the lounge expansion next spring.
