Golden Eels jump into pool

The Estevan Golden Eels Swim Club has started to practice for the 2014 season.

The Estevan Golden Eels swim club has experienced growth in membership for this year.

Coaches Akeela Jundt and Cassidy Reich said the Eels have about 70 youth swimmers this year, and more young people are on their wait list. The vast majority of their swimmers are on the competitive team that will be travelling to meets in June and July.

Jundt and Reich attributed the increase in the number of swimmers to the fun that the Golden Eels offer. They also have a lot of families in the club.

The Golden Eels had a dryland practice on May 1, and then they entered the pool for the first time this season on May 2. Their first full week of practice was May 5 to 9, and they're working their way into shape.

“It's just a matter of getting in the pool, because there's no way you can stay in swim shape without swimming,” said Jundt.

Their first event will be a mini meet on May 28.

“That's for the younger kids, especially,” said Jundt. “We might get our older kids to do a couple of group swims, but it's for the 10-and-unders. They come out, and their parents come out, and it's a way to showcase what the kids have learned so far, and how far they have grown, because you really do see such a big difference in the first month for the young kids.”

“It's also a mock swim meet, so that they learn what happens at a swim meet, how they stand to start with, and how to dive into the water, and what the whistles mean,” added Reich.

Their first full-fledged meet will be in mid-June in northeast Saskatchewan. Their home meet will be June 21.

There will be more competitions until provincials in late July.
