Philomena is the next movie that will be shown through the Estevan Arts Council's Energy City Film Circuit.
It will be shown on Saturday, April 26 at 4 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre in Estevan.
Philomena is a 2013 drama directed by Stephen Frears, based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, by journalist Martin Sixsmith. The film stars Judi Dench as Lee and Steve Coogan as Sixsmith, and it tells the true story of Lee's 50-year-long search for her son.
Lee was an unmarried Catholic woman who, decades after being forced by her community to give up her newborn son, embarked on a search to find him.
Catholic authorities in 1950s Ireland shamed thousands of women, including Lee, into giving up their children for adoption.
After 50 years of fruitless searching for her son’s whereabouts, Lee solicited the help of Sixsmith – a recently unemployed journalist. Determined to be positive despite the obstacles that might be in the future, the talkative Philomena shares stories from her past, savoring every moment on her journey to meet her child.
Sixsmith proves to be her biggest supporter.
