The 14th book in Marie Donais Calder’s Other Side series, the Other Side of Isolation, is now available.

The 14th book in Marie Donais Calder’s Other Side book series, The Other Side of Isolation, has been released.

This latest story examines the challenges related to isolation for the Canadian peacekeepers in Leer, Germany, following the Second World War. One of those peacekeepers was Donais Calder’s father, Ed Donais.

At this point in the series, the soldiers have been in Germany for nine months without any source of news or information, Donais Calder said. They receive little in the way of letters, which is typically their only source of information about their families or the outside world.

They also aren’t aware that the Canadian Forces' censor’s office is closed.

To complicate matters, six new soldiers have joined the peacekeeping regiment, and Donais Calder said they are causing a great deal of commotion.

Meanwhile, Donais Calder's mother, Frances Donais, has gained access to a radio, which has opened her up to a new world of music and information. It creates a contrast between her life in Alida, and the peacekeepers' life in Germany.

"A world without music is a somber world,” said Donais Calder.

The book’s cover features a 1939 radio that came from the Gervais collection in Alida. Across the cover’s banner is a sheet of music from a song that Donais Calder wrote for her family, called La Flamme dans mon Coeur (The Flame in my Heart).
