Hockey legends coming to Estevan

A Hockey Hall of Famer, a one-time scoring star and several other former NHL players are coming to Estevan on Tuesday, April 15 for a charity hockey game.

The hockey legends will be joined by local players to face the Bienfait Coalers for the contest. The game will start at 7 p.m. at Affinity Place.

Glenn Anderson will headline the all-star team. Anderson won five Stanley Cups with the Oilers in seven years from 1984 to 1990, and added a sixth title with the New York Rangers in 1994. He's among the NHL's all-time leaders in post-season scoring with 93 goals and 214 points.

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008.

Also on the all-star team is retired NHL star Bernie Nicholls. Nicholls is one of five players in NHL history to record 150 points in a season. He finished with more than 1,200 points in his NHL career.

Other players confirmed are: former Winnipeg Jets forward Pat Elyniuk; long-time Chicago Blackhawks forward Rich Preston; 2001 Stanley Cup champion Jeff Odgers, who hails from Spy Hill; two-time World Hockey Association champion defenceman Mike Ford; and long-time professional defenceman Gord Paddock.

“The Coalers have had a good run the last four years,” said Coalers co-manager Trevor Dutka. “We have the opportunity to play against some ex-NHL guys, and see how we stack up against them.”

Tickets are on sale for the game.

There will also be a social before the game involving the players, but only a limited number of tickets are available for the pre-game event.

Proceeds from the social and the game will be shared between the Rotary Club of Estevan, the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation and the Coalers. Dutka said the Coalers' share of the money will be directed towards renovations at the Bienfait Memorial Arena.
