Mariners open 2014 baseball season

The Seattle Mariners opened the 2014 Major League Baseball season with a 10-3 victory against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Seattle made some noise in the offseason by signing infielder Robinson Cano, formerly of the New York Yankees, to a 10-year contract, and they also brought in Willie Bloomquist, who was with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season. Seattle finished spring training with an 18-12 record. I hope the Mariners have a good season and make the playoffs.

In NCAA Baseball, the No. 19 Florida Gators swept the Louisiana State University Tigers over the weekend. The Gators are in a tie for first in the South Eastern Conference East Division.

In the Arena Football League, the Cleveland Gladiators got past the New Orleans Voodoo 37-26 in a close game. The Gladiators' record is 2-0, and they are in first place in the American East Division.

Other scores from Week 3 were: the Jacksonville Sharks hammered the San Antonio Talons 63-22, the Orlando Predators got past the Tampa Bay Storm 56-52 and the Pittsburgh Power edged the San Jose Sabercats 48-47.

In the NBA, the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Houston Rockets 118-107 in a one-sided game. The Clippers are in first place in the Pacific Division.

In the AHL, the Binghamton Senators split recent games. They beat the Syracuse Crunch 4-3 in a shootout, then they lost to the Albany Devils 3-2 in a shootout.

In the WHL, the Kootenay Ice beat the Calgary Hitmen 5-3 to win the series 4-2. The Ice will now take on the Medicine Hat Tigers in the next round.

In Major League Soccer, the Toronto FC lost their first game of the season, 3-0 to Real Salt Lake. Toronto’s record is 2-1 and their next game is against the Columbus Crew.

That’s all folks!
