(L-R) Wendy Suchan, who heads up the Duke of Edinburgh program for the Wylie-Mitchell Air Cadets, presented bronze-level certificates to Kelsie Jackiw, Hayden Sutter, Ethan Courteau and Parker McKelkie.

Four members of the Wylie-Mitchell Air Cadets have attained the bronze level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Sergeants Ethan Courteau, Kelsey Jackiw, Parker McKelkie and Hayden Sutter were presented with their awards on March 18.

The bronze medal's requirements are: dedicating at least 15 hours to community service, developing a skill over six months, spending at least 30 hours on fitness over 15 weeks, and embarking on an adventurous journey.

The journey must be at least two days and one night, with six hours spent on a planned activity and a hike of at least 25 kilometres. They also have to prepare equipment lists, menus and routes.

Courteau fulfilled his service component by spending 16 hours at the Estevan Humane Society, where he cleaned cages and spent time one-on-one with animals. His skill was collecting and categorizing an extensive hockey card collection.

He fulfilled the physical activity requirement through 36 hours of tae kwon-do, squash, physiotherapy, air cadet drills and lifting boxes and furniture for a family move. He completed the physical activity requirements despite a shoulder injury.

Jackiw completed 22 hours of service activities, which included babysitting, selling flowers for the Canadian Cancer Society and ringing bells for the Estevan Salvation Army's kettle campaign. Her skill is archery, as she has attained her expert bowman level, and is shooting targets from a further distance.

As for fitness, she completed 47 1/2 hours of physical activity through broomball, drills and physical training.

McKelkie performed 32 1/2 hours of volunteer work through the kettle campaign and raking leaves. He also dedicated time to working with the air cadets, and assisting with the Royal Canadian Legion's dishwashing, food preparing and serving efforts. His skill was playing alto saxophone with the Wylie-Mitchell Air Cadet Band.

He completed 74 hours of physical training through table tennis, drills and physical training.

Sutter is also a fourth-year air cadet. He had 16 1/2 hours of community activities through the kettle campaign, pool and park cleanup efforts, library craft preparation, bouncy ball supervision and alter service. His skill is to collect and categorize comic books.

He completed 44 1/2 hours of physical activities through broomball, horseback riding, hiking, baling, and drills and physical training.

The adventurous journey saw all four participants hike to and from the Metachos Ministries Lutheran Bible Camp. They walked to the camp while carrying their backpacks, and camped out in the tents. They were required to cook at least one hot meal per day over an open fire which they built. And then they walked back to Estevan.
