Aspiring Saskatchewan country music singer JJ Voss has been announced as the opening act for the Travis Tritt concert at Affinity Place on March 27.

The announcement was made on March 10. Voss has released two albums – Hillbilly Storybook and Show 'em Who's Voss, both of which have garnered radio play and award nominations.

He was recently nominated for the Male Artist of the Year Award from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association.

The award nomination was a nice feeling, he said.

“Awards and that kind of thing are not why I do this, but it does feel good that you get the nod, and when somebody recognizes that you are working hard,” said Voss.

Voss said that he was contacted by Terry Massey, who works as a consultant for many of the concerts at Affinity Place, to see if Voss would be interested in opening for Tritt. It's one of multiple shows in which he will be performing with Tritt in Saskatchewan.

“It helps the resume for sure,” Voss told Lifestyles. “He's an international superstar, so any time you can add it to your resume, it's great.”

He has also performed at several prominent musical events, including the Craven Country Jamboree and the festival held in conjunction with the Juno Awards last year. He has also performed alongside some prominent country musicians.

Voss is currently working on a third album. He's been collaborating with a couple of other Saskatchewan songwriters, and he has penning some songs on his own. He hopes to start recording in the fall, and then he hopes the album will be released in the spring.

His most recent single, If you Pull Away, will be released to radio in April.

He said he was drawn to music because he grew up in a community where sports are king, but music was more of a natural for him than hockey.

“One of my earliest memories was going to a country dance hall about eight miles from my family's farm, and I just remember going to dances with my folks, and being really drawn in by the band,” said Voss.

Voss said he hasn't performed in Estevan previously, but he's looking forward to coming to the Energy City. He has also heard some great things about Affinity Place.

Tickets for the concert are still available.
