Elecs compete at regionals

Comments

The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs senior boys' and senior girls' basketball teams each won once at 4A regionals, but they saw their respective seasons come to an end.

The boys opened their regional tournament with a 109-45 loss to Moose Jaw Peacock – the host team and the top-rated team in the province. Coach Shane Ross said he felt it was an eye-opener to play a high school team that was as good as Peacock, as they have skill and depth.

Estevan won the consolation game at regionals by beating Meadow Lake 78-76. Ross said they had a much better effort against Meadow Lake, a team that had some good players, but Ross believes his team wanted the win more.

The senior girls Elecs competed at a regional tournament in Lumsden. Estevan opened with a 65-56 loss against Swift Current.

They recovered to trounce Meadow Lake 69-41 in the consolation final.

Coach Jessie Smoliak could not be reached for comment.

There were four regional tournaments for each of the boys' and girls' tournaments. The winner of each regional advanced to the Hoopla provincial tournament in Regina.
