The Estevan Apex Midget AA Bruins have advanced to the South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League (SSMHL) semi-final, thanks to a sweep of the Regina Flames in a best-of-three series.
Estevan won Game 1 3-0 on March 5, and took Game 2 6-4 two nights later.
Game 1 was scoreless until late in the second period, when Kyle Salaway and Kaelan Holt scored 2:21 apart to give Estevan a 2-0 lead. Salaway, Holt and Dylan Lay were each in on both goals.
Preston Hutt scored with 2:43 to play in the third to clinch the victory.
Tanner Tytlandsvik was in goal for the shutout victory.
Estevan scored four times in the first period of Game 2 and never looked back. Holt (a goal and two assists) and Salaway (three assists) had three points in the first period. Lay, Colton Winton and Tyler Hengen also scored.
The teams traded goals in the second and third periods. Colton Gingras scored for Estevan in the second, and Winton had his second of the game in the third. The Flames scored twice in the second half of the third to make the score respectable.
Estevan will play the Regina Capitals in the league semi-final. Game 1 is March 13 in Regina, Game 2 is March 15 at Affinity Place at 7 p.m., and Game 3, if necessary, would be March 19 in Regina.
The Estevan TS&M Bantam AA Bruins outgunned the Regina Monarchs 8-5 on March 10 in Game 1 of their best-of-three consolation quarter-final.
Cole Fonstad had two goals and four assists, and was in on Estevan's final six goals. Ryder Pierson also scored twice. Hunter Piche, Preston Brodziak, Hayden Cutler and Brayden Pachal had the other goals.
Jacob Chalus had three assists.
Jeremy Dumaine was in goal.
Game 2 is slated for March 15 in Regina. A date for Game 3 has not been announced.
The Estevan Sherritt Coal Peewee AA Bruins advanced to the SSMHL semi-final with a 5-2 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors on March 8. Estevan swept the best-of-three series.
Cole Brooks scored in the first period, and Kersey Reich added two goals in the second, as Estevan took a 3-0 lead. Moose Jaw scored late in the second to pull within two, but Tristan Seeman and Dawson Schaff scored in the first half of the third to help Estevan pull away.
Bryson Garton was the winning goaltender.
Estevan will play the Yorkton Terriers in the next round. Game 1 will be March 13 in Yorkton, and Game 2 will be March 16 in Estevan at 1 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium. A date for Game 3 hasn't been set.
The Estevan Gem Well Atom AA Bruins saw their season come to an end, as they were swept by the Yorkton Terriers in a best-of-three South East Minor Hockey League semi-final series.
Estevan lost 6-3 in Game 1 on March 8 in Estevan. Tayce Miller had two goals and an assist, and Alec Waldegger also scored for Estevan. The Bruins led 1-0 seven minutes into the first period, but surrendered the next four goals.
Blayze Siebert had the lone goal in Game 2, a 4-1 loss the following day in Yorkton.
Layne Gilroy was in goal for both games.
