Coalers and Mustangs will meet in Big 6 final

The Bienfait Coalers and the Midale Mustangs will meet in the Big 6 Hockey League's final for the fourth time in the last five years.

Bienfait defeated the Carnduff Red Devils 5-4 on March 7 to win the best-of-seven semi-final series in six games. Carnduff had a 2-1 series lead after the first three games, but Bienfait won the next three contests.

The Coalers are seeking their fourth straight league championship. This is the sixth straight year they have been in the final.

The Midale Mustangs defeated the Wawota Flyers 7-6 in triple overtime on March 12 in the seventh and deciding game of their semi-final series.

Wawota took a 3-2 series lead with a 4-2 win on March 5, but Midale evened the series with a 4-0 victory in Game 6 on March 7.

Midale and Bienfait met in the final for the first time in 2010; Midale swept Bienfait to win their third straight title. The following year, Bienfait beat Midale in seven games in the final to deny the Mustangs a fourth straight championship.

Bienfait defeated Midale in six games in the 2012 final.

Dates for the final have yet to be announced.

In provincial action, Bienfait is leading Wynyard 1-0 in the best-of-three Senior A south final. The Coalers took Game 1 4-2 on March 8. Wynyard won Game 2 6-2 the following day, but the result was overturned a few days later because Wynyard dressed an ineligible player.

Game 2 will be replayed on March 16 in Bienfait at 7 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will be March 17 in Bienfait at 8 p.m.

The Redvers Rockets lost 9-3 to Radville in Game 1 of their Senior C south final on March 7 in Redvers. Game 2 is slated for March 14 in Radville, and Game 3, if necessary, would be March 16 in Redvers at 8 p.m.
