The Rotary Club of Estevan will host one of its top fundraisers of the year, its annual auction, on Thursday, March 20 at the Estevan Shoppers Mall.
Merchandise browsing will start at 5 p.m. and the auction will begin an hour later. Hundreds of items will be available in this year's auction this year, and the total value of the donations typically exceeds $25,000.
Auction spokesperson Michel Cyrenne expects there will be a wide variety of merchandise and gift certificates available this year.
The business community has always been very generous with their donations, he said, and he expects that the support will continue in 2014. Businesses that don't donate products or merchandise will often donate cash.
Auction proceeds are used to fund numerous community initiatives, such as:
*Sponsorship of a local student to attend Adventures in Citizenship in Ottawa and the Model United Nations Assembly in Winnipeg;
*Short-term student exchange programs, with local students travelling abroad, and international students coming to Estevan;
*Financial support for such projects as: the annual Rotary 4-H show and sale; local 4-H speaking contests; the Estevan Salvation Army; the Community Hamper Association; the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program; the Estevan Arts Council's Stars for Saskatchewan program; and the Envision Counselling and Support Centre.
Rotary has also previously supported a long-term student exchange program; the naming rights campaign at Affinity Place; the washroom and concession building at the Souris Valley Theatre; Penta Completions Estevan Minor Football; the new helipad for the STARS Air Ambulance at St. Joseph's Hospital; and the Hearthstone Community Campaign, which is fundraising for Estevan's new regional nursing home.
Cyrenne said the auction is an important community event. Rotary does a lot of work in the community, and it requires events like the auction to be well-supported so that the projects can continue.
