RCMP investigating telemarketing fraud

Comments

The Estevan RCMP is reminding the public about scams in the area after police received a report March 4 about an attempted fraud.

A male with a thick East Indian accent called the targeted individual, and claimed that there were signs of viruses and spam coming from the potential victim's computer. If the targeted person paid a fee using a credit card, the caller said he could clean up the problems.

The operator claimed he was with the company P.C. Doctor.

Upon suspecting it was a scam, the target asked for the name and number of the operator, but the operator would only give his employee number. Upon further challenging the credentials of the operator and hanging up on him, the operator called back, saying he was from the RCMP's anti-theft unit.

When the target threatened to contact the Estevan RCMP, the operator countered by saying he'd lock up the potential victim's computer. The target ultimately hung up on the suspect.

The Estevan RCMP does not conduct any kind of business in this manner online, and if anyone receives a call that they suspect is a fraud, they should contact the Estevan RCMP or the Estevan Police Service.
