Elecs advance to regionals

Comments

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs senior girls' and senior boys' basketball teams competed at conference tournament February 28 and March 1, and each team has qualified for regionals.

The female Elecs were the host team for the southeast conference tournament. Estevan opened with a 70-28 victory over Yorkton Regional, but lost 67-46 to Weyburn.

The win over Yorkton punched the Elecs' ticket for regionals. Estevan will face Swift Current in the first round of regionals in Lumsden.

The male Elecs, meanwhile, beat Melville 73-50 in a play-in game for the conference tournament. The Elecs then upset Yorkton Sacred Heart 76-60 to qualify for regionals.

Coach Shane Ross said his team executed a strong, full-court press for the entire 40 minutes against Yorkton Sacred Heart. He noted that Sacred Heart beat Estevan by 16 earlier in the season.

The Elecs then lost 96-65 to Weyburn in the conference semi-finals.

Ross singled out Josh Jensen, Vince Dela Pena, Mitchel Clark and Dallas Dowhaniuk for their efforts, as they averaged 35-plus minutes a game during the tournament.

The senior boys will be in Moose Jaw for the 4A regional playdowns. Estevan will open against Moose Jaw Peacock – the top-ranked 4A team in the province.
