Hedley delivers another memorable concert

Hedley lead singer Jacob Hoggard kept fans thoroughly entertained during a concert at Affinity Place in Estevan on February 23.

Canadian pop-rock group Hedley made their return to Affinity Place in Estevan on February 23 through their Wild Live Tour, and brought another high-tempo, energetic concert, much to the delight of about 1,800 fans who were in attendance.

And the band members – lead singer Jacob Hoggard, guitarist Dave Rosin, bassist Thomas MacDonald and drummer Christian Crippin – had several new wrinkles for their show since they were in Estevan a little more than two years ago.

Much like two years ago, there was an elaborate sound and light show. Two video panels, located at the north and the south edges of the stage, relayed to spectators what was happening on the stage. Two more video panels showed music videos while Hedley was playing.

Dazzling and dancing lights were in the background.

"Estevan, thank you so much for never letting us go," Hoggard told the audience.

Hedley opened the concert by playing Anything, a crowd-pleasing tune from their most recent album, Wild Life, which came out in November of 2013. Fans raucously sang along with every word of that song, as well as the next song Hedley played, One Life.

Hits such as All the Way, Invincible and Old School followed, and then there was a brief intermission.

After the intermission, the scene shifted to a smaller platform about 20 feet to the west of the main stage, which brought the show closer to the audience. There, Hedley played several songs, including Heaven in our Headlights and Wild Life, which is the title track of their latest album.

Local cheerleaders were given a chance to join the band on stage during a rendition of Cha-Ching.

Fans screamed and hollered as Hedley continued to play songs that they recognized, such as Perfect, which was one of the final songs in the main set. The spectators also cheered as Hoggard dashed to the temporary stage to fire t-shirts into the crowd, and when smoke billowed from the stage at the end of one of Hedley's final songs.

The band returned to the stage for an encore that featured Kiss you Inside Out, The Sweater Song and other tunes. Hedley members left following one more prolonged ovation.

Hoggard informed the audience that the Estevan concert came on a special anniversary: it was nine years since the current band's first concert together.

"We are such a lucky group of dudes," Hoggard told the audience. "It's not just because we've been together for almost 10 years, and it's not just because we get to play music for a living and travel the world for a job. It's because we have people like you in our lives, Estevan."

If the fans in Estevan continue to support the band, then Hoggard said Hedley will remain in their lives.

Three other musicians joined Hedley for the concert: pop singer Alyssa Reid, R&B singer JRDN and dance singer Danny Fernandes. Reid opened the evening by singing such songs as Hurricane and Satisfaction Guaranteed before wrapping up with her biggest hit, Alone Again.

JRDN (real name Ralph Jordon Croucher), who is up for the top R&B artist at this year's Juno Awards, performed his most recent release, Love Ain't Enough, along with some of his other best-known songs, such as Like Magic and Live my Dream.

Fernandes was the last to perform before Hedley, and he kept the crowd energized with such songs as Fly Again (Broken Wings), Fantasy and his newest song, Kryptonite.

Hedley is currently in the midst of a whirlwind, cross-country tour that includes 37 stops. The tour opened February 14 in Rosin's hometown of Prince George, B.C., and it will continue until April 12 in Hoggard's hometown of Abbotsford, B.C.
