Big 6 ready for playoffs

Comments

The Big 6 Hockey League's regular season is finished, and teams are now preparing for the playoffs.

The Bienfait Coalers finished the regular season with a perfect 18-0 record, and they are the No. 1 seed. Their final game of the regular season was a 9-3 rout of the Arcola-Kisbey Combines on February 1.

Since they had the best record during the regular season, Bienfait will get a bye in the first round.

The Coalers are seeking their fourth straight Lincoln Cup as the league's playoff champions. The last team to accomplish that feat was the Wawota Flyers from 1972 to 1975.

The Midale Mustangs (12-5-1) are the second seed, and they'll open the playoffs against the No. 7 Redvers Rockets (3-10-5). Midale finished the season by winning three times in a four-day span, including a 5-4 overtime win over Redvers on February 3.

Midale also defeated the Wawota Flyers 8-3 on February 1 to clinch second spot, and then they edged the Carnduff Red Devils 3-2 on February 4 in the league's final game of the regular season.

Redvers' other game late in the year was a 5-4 shootout loss to the Oxbow Huskies on January 31.

The No. 3 Flyers (9-7-2) will face the sixth-seeded Combines (6-11-1). Wawota lost the game to Midale on February 1, but recovered to defeat the Carnduff Red Devils 9-5 on February 1. Arcola-Kisbey's final game was the loss to Bienfait.

The final series is the No. 4 Huskies (8-9-1) against the fifth-seeded Red Devils (7-11). Oxbow's final game was the shootout win over Redvers on January 31, while Carnduff lost to Wawota and Midale during their final two games of the season.

All first round series will have a best-of-five format.
