Estevan area residents can now start submitting nominations for the Quota International of Estevan/SaskPower Women of Today Awards.
Awards will be handed out in four different categories once again this year. The first is the SaskPower Outstanding Contribution to the Workplace Award. It is presented to a woman who strives to make the workplace a better and more productive place.
The second is the Ida Petterson Memorial Award for Outstanding Entrepreneur, which is handed out to a woman who has thrived in the business world. The award's namesake, Petterson, was one of Estevan's most prominent entrepreneurs, and the first woman to be elected the mayor of a Saskatchewan city.
The Shirley Orsted Memorial Award for Young Woman of Today honours a woman between the ages of 15 and 20 who is attending school in the Estevan area, who demonstrates leadership skills, and who makes a significant contribution to her community. It's named after Orsted, who was a long-time local educator and a founder of the local Quota club.
The final award is the SaskTel Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community. It recognizes a woman who has made a significant contribution to improving the lives of the citizens of Estevan in either a paid position, or a volunteer capacity.
Organizers started to accept nomination forms on January 29. Nominators are encouraged to include letters of reference, statements of support, newspaper clippings and other materials in the nomination package. There can be up to 10 pages of materials. A recent photo also needs to be included.
A selection committee, comprised of an independent group of volunteers, will select the winners.
Their decisions will be based solely on information presented in the nomination package. Criteria will include skills and abilities, people skills, character, balance in life, and special circumstances that the nominee has had to overcome.
The submission deadline is Monday, March 17. The candidates for each award will be revealed on Wednesday, March 26 at noon at the Royal Canadian Legion.
Winners will be announced at the Women of Today Awards luncheon on Wednesday, April 23 at the Wylie Mitchell hall in Estevan.
