The Green Party of Saskatchewan (GPS) will campaign in the next provincial election to democratize our Crown corporations.
A GPS government would never privatize a Crown corporation. Instead, a GPS government would pass the Crown Cooperatives Act, which would transform many Crown corporations into Crown cooperatives. Under this change, Crown cooperatives would still be owned by the Government of Saskatchewan, but would operate the same way as cooperatives by making the following changes:
*The election of the board of directors by citizen members;
*The holding of a public annual general meeting where the minister responsible for the crown, the board members and the executive officers would be held accountable in person for their decisions,
*The release of quarterly financial reports;
*The sharing of annual dividends with citizen members.
Our party also believes strongly that this policy will end the privatization debate because Crown cooperatives will be transparent and democratic. This policy will help promote cooperatives as Saskatchewan’s third economic engine alongside the public and private sectors.
Any Saskatchewan citizen who wants to provide feedback on this policy can contact the GPS.
